Engagement

An initiative driven by stakeholders

Stakeholders, Community Groups, and Technical Panels

Who are EMRTAI Stakeholders?

The EMRTAI’s stakeholders represent the interests of end-users of the technology assessment information generated by the Initiative.

Stakeholders support the mission of the EMRTAI and consist of representatives of any of the following groups: buyers and users of technology; technology developers/vendors; consulting engineers and environmental scientists; mining company affiliate personnel; mining industry organization representatives; state, federal, or Tribal environmental specialists; and others (as appropriate).

Stakeholders:

  • Provide insight on user needs

  • Assist in prioritizing the types of technologies to be assessed

  • Support development of protocols that will produce credible data to inform decision-making and technology advancement

  • Contribute to outreach activities within the groups that they represent.

Stakeholder Group Meetings

The EMRTAI’s Stakeholder Group meets quarterly and is always open to membership by interested stakeholders in all parts of mining and legacy mine site remediation.

The next Stakeholder Group Meeting is on August 26, 2025

Technical Panels

Subject Matter Experts in mining, mine remediation, and/or critical minerals monitoring and recovery technologies can also serve on Technical Panels, which will provide guidance in developing assessment protocols that align with key performance criteria. Technical experts also support the development of summary reports for the stakeholder community at large through peer review.

Technical Panels Seeking Members

New Technical Panel: Technologies to recover critical minerals from solid mining waste.

Interested subject matter experts can download and submit an application to info@emrtai.org.

1a – Technologies for Recovery of Critical Minerals from Mining-Influenced Water

A Call for Applications (CFA) for technologies that are at a technology readiness level (TRL)  3-4 (Track A) or TRL 5-7 (pilot-scale; Track B) was announced in Fall 2024. EMRTAI is working with three technology developers who submitted applications to design technology assessments for recovering critical minerals from mining-influenced water . A Technical Panel of 8 stakeholders and subject matter experts was assembled to provide input and review the general protocol.  The Technical Panel will provide a peer review of the Technology Assessment Report.

1b – Technologies for Characterization of Critical Minerals in Solid Mining Waste

A Call for Applications (CFA) for technologies that are commercially available or at a technology readiness level (TRL) of 5-7 was announced in Fall 2024. An application was submitted by a commercial vendor for using field portable x-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) to characterize critical minerals in solid mining waste. A Technical Panel of 9 stakeholders and subject matter experts was assembled to provide input and review the general protocol that will guide the technology assessment.  The Technical Panel will provide a peer review of the Technology Assessment Report.
